Yep, any 6-speed bolted to a 1.8t will fit. Only problem is the gear ratios would not be fit for a diesel, ratios are really close and the final drive is too high for real efficient highway driving. On the TDI club list, SVTWEB had a euro-TDI 6-speed transmission installed in his TDI jetta. That would be ideal, but good luck getting one in the

Here in Canada avgas is 1.20 per liter, and dyed diesel (non road) 55c per litre. For you Yanks, thats 5 bucks an imperial gallon vs 2.50. Assuming 8 gph gas and 5 gph diesel, for 1500 hours of flying, the difference in fuel cost is over 40k, hence my request for info on the weight of vw diesels. Thanks everyone.
Here is a thread on the TDi club summarizing all of the swaps that have been highlighted on their forums and there are several Mk1 conversions: Conversion listing on TDiclub. Personally a full TDi swap with the appropriate injectors and pump on a Mk1 chassis with reinforcements and the right gearing would be a great daily driver. :thumbup:
andyd. 1070 posts · Joined 2009. #3 · Oct 16, 2011. the 1.9 in a factory t4 is a td mate not a tdi engine its 68bhp and gutless. in factory state the 2.5 is the best engine they offered in a t4. personally i think a 1.9tdi (engine converted) t4 is the best setup by far, much nicer to drive and much more efficient than all my mates 2.5's.
Is 1.9 TDI a Good Engine? The 1.9 TDI is a fairly nice engine to have under the hood. For one thing, it’s resilient and not liable to massive failures. However, as with any diesel as their very nature means a lack of smoothness compared to petrol engines. What are the 1.9 TDI Versions? Motor oil IS important and necessary to get right. Your TDI requires a 5W-40 synthetic oil. Shell Rotella T6 is one of the best 5W-40 oils you can use and is readily available at Walmart*. With proper maintenance, the engine can easily outlast the car it's in. 200k miles is nothing for a TDI engine. Good luck and Welcome to TDIclub.
