Strictly speaking both of these are connected to ZGM which then “translates” messages and forward to other units in a car via appropriate buses. As long as your ZGM is functioning properly there is no difference.

The BMW Head-Up Display is controlled via the BMW iDrive Controller. The head-up display system works by utilizing a system of projector and mirrors which projects high-contrast images onto a transparent film on the BMW front windshield. The Head-Up Display is located directly in front of the driver’s line of eyesight on the front windshield.

I think the module needs coding. I bought my replacement module off eBay. I SPECIFICALLY made sure it's for F10 2014 and up. After body shop removed the bumper, accessed the headlight and replaced the module, it still DID NOT WORK. I've been driving all summer with only (1) Drivers side angel eyes working. Very embarrassing.
